Overview
Wheezing is a high-pitched, continuous musical breathing sound produced by turbulent airflow through narrowed, inflamed, or obstructed tracheobronchial airways during expiration or inspiration.
Possible Causes
Bronchospasm, airway mucosal edema, hypersecretion of mucus, inhaled allergen exposure, viral lower respiratory infections, and cardiogenic pulmonary edema ("cardiac asthma").
When to Seek Care
Consult a pulmonologist or primary doctor if you experience new or worsening wheezing, nighttime awakenings, or frequent inhaler reliance.
