Overview
A sore throat is acute pain, scratchiness, or irritation of the pharynx that often worsens when swallowing. It is the hallmark manifestation of acute pharyngitis, tonsillitis, or peritonsillar inflammatory processes.
Possible Causes
Upper respiratory viral infections (80-90% of cases), Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus, allergies, dry indoor air, and vocal cord strain.
When to Seek Care
Consult a doctor if sore throat persists longer than 3-4 days, is accompanied by high fever without a cough, or if tonsils show white exudate.
