Overview
Nausea is an unpleasant sensation of the urge to vomit, whereas vomiting (emesis) is the forceful oral expulsion of gastric contents triggered by coordinated autonomic reflex pathways controlled by the brainstem chemoreceptor trigger zone.
Possible Causes
Infectious pathogens (Norovirus, Rotavirus), bacterial enterotoxins, vestibular disturbances, medication adverse effects (chemotherapy, NSAIDs), and intracranial hypertension.
When to Seek Care
Seek medical care if vomiting prevents hydration for over a day, is accompanied by high fever, or occurs during pregnancy.
