Overview

Red eye is caused by dilation of the superficial conjunctival and episcleral blood vessels. While commonly due to benign conjunctivitis, it can signify vision-threatening conditions such as uveitis, keratitis, or acute glaucoma.

Possible Causes

Adenovirus infection, contact lens overwear, seasonal allergens, foreign body irritation, ocular trauma, and dry eye disease.

When to Seek Care

See an optometrist or ophthalmologist if redness is accompanied by pain, thick pus discharge, or contact lens use.
