Calculated from serum creatinine using equations such as CKD-EPI. Used to stage Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):
- Stage 1 (Normal or High): ≥90 mL/min/1.73m² (with persistent kidney damage)
- Stage 2 (Mild Reduction): 60-89 mL/min/1.73m²
- Stage 3a & 3b (Moderate Reduction): 30-59 mL/min/1.73m²
- Stage 4 (Severe Reduction): 15-29 mL/min/1.73m²
- Stage 5 (Kidney Failure / ESRD): <15 mL/min/1.73m² (dialysis or transplant indicated)
